In the prophet Noah’s time, many people chose wrong. Heavenly Father loves His children, so He cleansed the earth to stop the wickedness and give a fresh start. Noah obeyed God and was kept safe in the ark. After the Flood, God made a promise with Noah.
The rainbow was a sign for Noah to remind him that God keeps his promises if Noah keeps his. The rainbow came after the storm, just like God’s blessings often come after hard times. He blesses us and helps us start again through making sacred covenants.
It can be hard for young kids to understand the difference and organization of covenants, ordinances, and signs. Heck—it can even be hard for adults! Here’s a yummy treat object lesson to help!

Materials: (For each child to make one Fruit Loop rainbow)
•½ a pipe cleaner (a standard length pipe cleaner cut in half, about 6 inches long)
•about 6 mini marshmallows
•15-20 Fruit Loops.
•paper plate

1. Sort the Colors/Learn the Promises: Pour out 15–20 Fruit Loops and sort them by color. Each color represents a promise that we make with Heavenly Father . Noah made similar promises with Heavenly Father. Some examples could be:
-
- Red: Follow Jesus
- Yellow: Obey God
- Green: Remember Jesus
- Purple: Help others
- Blue: Repent
- Orange: Love God and others
2. Thread the Fruit Loops/Make Covenants : Thread the Fruit Loops onto the pipe cleaner. This physical process of threading the Fruit Loop promises together is like an ordinance. Through ordinances like baptism, taking the sacrament, etc. we do physical things to show God we are making promises with Him. The pipe cleaner is like the Priesthood. All the Fruit Loop promises are held together with this. Without structure and authority, they’d fall apart!
3. Add Marshmallows/Covenants Connect us With Heaven : Add a few mini marshmallows to each end. The marshmallow clouds represent heaven and God on one end, and us on earth on the other. Covenants are 2-way promises that connect us with God. We make promises and he blesses us in return. The result is the overall rainbow, a visual sign that is super sweet!
