In Alma 8-12, we see the ultimate examples of missionary work by Alma and Amulek in the city of Ammonihah. Their story teaches us that sharing the gospel doesn't always require formal preaching; often, it begins with simple acts of friendship!
For kids, being a missionary can start by being a good friend. Just as Alma and Amulek showed kindness and support to those around them, children can reflect Christ's love through their actions. While the child is coloring the coloring page, it's a perfect opportunity to have a discussion (you know... multitasking. Keep those kids busy with their hands so they can listen with their ears1) Here are a few ways kids can be missionaries by being good friends:
1. Be Kind: Kindness is a universal language. By showing kindness to others, kids can exemplify the teachings of Jesus Christ and invite the Spirit into their interactions.
2. Include Everyone: Alma and Amulek worked together and included others in their mission. Kids can follow this example by including classmates and peers in their activities and conversations.
3. Share Your Testimony: Just as Alma shared the message of repentance and faith, children can share uplifting stories, scriptures, and values with their friends.
A good way I like to explain testimony to kids is by writing some statements on the board and reading them to the child, then have them decide if it's something that resonates with them and they feel strongly about, or something they're not really sure of, (or true/false to keep it simple for younger kids). A great place to start is the baptismal interview questions. See baptismal questions here.
Ideas of statements:
- I believe God is my Heavenly Father and He loves me.
- I believe Jesus Christ died for me.
- I know Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers.
- I believe families can be together forever.
- I believe Joseph Smith was a prophet and translated the Book of Mormon.
- I believe we have a prophet and apostles on the earth today.
- I support the bishop and my church leaders.
- I believe I am blessed for keeping the commandments.
Alma and Amulek’s story reminds us that every act of friendship can be a step towards sharing the gospel and being a light to those around us.
