If you teach Primary, you know you have limited time to get a concept or principle through those kids' heads. Maybe 5 minutes, depending on the age group. Here's your Spark-Notes version of this week's Come Follow Me chapters:
- In the Book of Mormon, Alma 5-7 touches on the power of having the Savior’s image in our countenance. Alma, addressing the people of Zarahemla and Gideon, asks questions that encourage self-examination and spiritual growth. He asks, “Have ye received his image in your countenances?” (Alma 5:14). Talk about a reality check!
- To have the Savior’s image in our countenance means to have His attributes—love, kindness, patience, and humility. When we strive to emulate Christ, our actions reflect His teachings, guiding us on the right path. Alma’s discourse emphasizes repentance, faith, and the importance of living a Christ-centered life.
- By regularly examining our lives and aligning our behaviors with the Savior’s example, we stay spiritually grounded. Alma’s call to repentance and his reminder of the joy and peace that come from living righteously serve as a powerful motivation. As we internalize these principles, our countenance will naturally reflect the Savior, influencing our choices and actions positively.
- In chapters 5 through 7, Alma’s message is clear: displaying the Savior’s image not only brings personal peace but also helps us navigate life’s challenges. Let us strive daily to reflect Christ’s light, ensuring that our path remains illuminated by His divine guidance.
Now the fun part... Tell the class you're going to go on a scavenger hunt and need to make sure you have the proper tools to give you direction on your journey.
1. Print the attached compasses sheet on card stock. Cut, color, and glue.
2. Re-iterate the point made from the lesson how it's through having the Savior's image in your countenance that you can be sure you're on the right path. This is like the mirror (tin foil) and the compass.
3. Have the class stand with their compasses on one side of the room. Give a few scavenger hunt directions such as: (just examples)
- Take 5 steps towards the door
- Holding your compass in front of you, take 8 steps forward in the direction the needle is pointing.
- Walk to the chalkboard, then take 3 steps to the left
4. At the end destination, you could have a treat for each child or just a sign saying "Joy and Eternal Life". Finding joy and eternal life in real life is ONLY made possible through Jesus Christ.
