Symbols that Lead to Christ

In Exodus chapters 7–13, we read about the plagues in Egypt and how the Lord helped the Israelites escape from Pharaoh. After many warnings, the final plague was the death of the firstborn, but God gave His people a way to be protected. He commanded them to sacrifice a lamb and place its blood on their doorposts so the destroying angel would “pass over” their homes.

This moment, called the Passover, is one of the most important symbolic stories in the Old Testament. The lamb without blemish represents Jesus Christ, who is often called the Lamb of God. Just like the lamb’s blood saved the Israelites from physical death, Jesus Christ’s sacrifice saves us from sin and spiritual death. The door marked with blood reminds us that when we follow Christ and make covenants with Him, we are protected and guided.

These powerful symbols didn’t stop in the Old Testament. Today, we see these same meanings in the sacrament. The bread represents Jesus Christ’s body, and the water represents His blood. Each week, when we take the sacrament, we remember His sacrifice and renew our promises to follow Him. The Passover and the sacrament are both reminders that Jesus Christ is our Savior, and He is the way we return to God.

For children, these connections can be especially meaningful when they can see and interact with the symbols. Simple visuals like bread, water, a lamb, and even the marked doorway help bring these abstract ideas to life. Teaching kids how Old Testament stories point to Jesus Christ helps them build a strong foundation of faith and understanding from a young age.
